Undefined
In the exhibition “Undefined,” land, identity, and memory intertwine, exploring the complexities of identity in the occupied territories through the perspective of an artist who grew up in the Golan. I search for belonging in a reality suspended between past and present, between what is defined and undefined.
In the first video, I confront viewers with silence and carefully chosen words revealing societal prejudices, which then turn inward, becoming judgments on the self.
In the second video, filmed in our Golan land, I run barefoot toward another version of myself, yet an invisible wall and a cord around my waist prevent the encounter, reflecting internal conflict and the search for identity in a land I belong to only through its soil.
A collaborative poetic text breaks the ambiguity of the visual works. A Syrian anthem from 1983, once on my grandfather’s wall, fades over time, testifying to belonging beyond our control. A sculpture of soil and water bears a fingerprint, marking existence, persistence, and personal impact.
The exhibition dialogues between silence, ambiguity, imposed identity, and self-made identity under the shadow of the Golan.
