Wafaa' Moussa

I Am a Memory’s Immigrant

Between what is preserved and what is forgotten, and between who I am and who I could have been. I, Wafaa, was born in 1997, into a new generation of history, yet questions from the past remain unanswered in the present. I live amidst ongoing struggles, searching for my “inner light.” This work is not only a documentation of family history but also an attempt to connect personal memory with the family story, reviving what did not choose me. The project is named after my sister Nour, who had Down syndrome and passed away in 2021, expressing memory and identity. It traces my family, the Maronite Abu Moussa family from Abtal, Lebanon, who fled sectarian conflict to Eilabun around 1812. Some settled in Isfiya as Rouhana, others in Bethlehem as Jabbour. Through migration, religious conversion, and loss, the work explores identity and memory, blending Christian, Islamic, and political symbols to link past, present, and future.
