Since last year, thoughts have been lingering in my mind, which eventually led to an idea and a question about "who supports whom within the family framework." Does my father support me and try to understand me, or is it I who support him and try to understand him? Most of the conversations between my father and me have sparked an inner debate about his presence and support in my life journey. There is an Arabic saying I’ve heard since my childhood, which states that "the father is like the back" and "the family is the support" and "the mother is the home." Although it is a general saying, I took it personally because my family is my inspiration, and it is the reason I began my journey and the idea behind my project. In this exhibition, sculptures of the spine and the back are presented. I sculpted the back from concrete, and the spine from clay. I built the size of the back to match the size of my father’s back and took the spine out of its original place, dismantling and enlarging it ten times its normal size. I chose it because it is the foundation of the body. As for my choice of materials, I selected concrete, a very solid material, and clay, a soft and living material, to symbolize the blend of my mother and father. I sculpted each vertebra of the spine separately, independently, and with different details, representing each member of my family. I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, my father, Raja Hamad, my only hero and companion in my journey, and my mother, Jihan Abu Ta’ah, whose smile was a homeland in my days.
