Abdelqader Abdelaqader

Requiem

In my final project, I deal with the themes of mourning, loss, and the feeling of emptiness after the recent passing of my father. I found a series of recent photos on his mobile phone, which he took at his workplace. My father worked as a construction electrician, and he documented various stages of construction, focusing on the electrical wiring systems running throughout the building. The photos revealed all the drama hidden behind the outer walls. In these images, I recognized the emotional processes I went through with myself, between the experience of collapse and destruction, between the attempt to rebuild and the subsequent breakdown. I designed a series of garments with spiritual, tribal, and ritualistic significance to reduce the distance between our worlds. In this series, I created textile works using a hand-knitting machine. The heavy weight of the garments expresses the deep experience of mortality I underwent as a designer and as a human being. Techniques: Hand-knitting with a domestic machine, hand-sewing with a sewing machine, metal bending and welding, digital printing, and stitching. Materials: Wool, nylon and silk threads, Lycra fabrics, copper pipes and wires, plastic piece. Photography: Rawan Julani
